Here is a quick guide to some of the beautiful birds of Puerto Vallarta.

West-Mexican Chachalaca (Ortalis poliocephala)

The West-Mexican Chachalaca can be identified by long tails, fairly long and stout tarsi, long necks and loud raucous calls. The upperparts and upper breast  are grayish brown, but the head and upper neck are greyer in colour. The lower breast and belly are white with cinnamon undertail.

Orange-fronted Parakeet (Aratinga canicularis)

The Orange-fronted parakeet is a medium sized parrot which is mainly green with yellow below and with a more olive tone on the breast. The wings are blue on the outside with yellow inside, and the pointed tail is blue. The head has a blue crown with an orange forehead.

Russet-Crowned Motmot (Momotus Mexicanus)

The russet-crowned motmot is just over 12 inches in length. The wings are short and the blue tail is long.  It is blue-green above and pale green below, with a single black spot on its chest.  The cap is a russet-brown.

Yellow-Winged Cacique (Cacicus melanicterus)

The yellow-winged cacique is black with bright yellow on the wings, rump and tail, and it has a long and thin white bill.  Their song is odd, loud and shrill.

San Blas Jay (Cyanocorax sanblasianus)

The San Blas Jay is a large jay found in on the Pacific coast of central Mexico. It has dark black underparts with bright blue wings, back and tail. They are often found living in groups of up to 30 individual birds.

Black-Throated Magpie Jay (Calocitta formosa)

The black-throated magpie jay is 23 to 30 inches long of which more than half of this is the tail. The upper parts of the bird are blue with white tips on the tail feathers and the underparts are white. The bill, legs, head, and  crest are black except for a pale blue patch over and under the eyes.

Elegant Trogon (Trogon Elegans)

Elegant Trogons are medium-sized large bellied birds. They have a large, round head and a short, stout bill. Male Elegant Trogons have coppery green upperparts and are red underneath. They have a white band across the breast and are black and white on the underside of the tail with a  black face and throat. Females are similar to males however they have grayish-brown upperparts with white around the eye.
