Puerto Vallarta’s newest grocery store, La Comer, located in Fluvial next to Costco, was generating a lot of buzz from the moment construction began. The second La Comer concept store to arrive in the region (the first opening late last year in Nuevo Vallarta), it promised a more upscale shopping experience, yet the same prices found at other grocery stores like Soriana and Mega. But now that the Fluvial location has opened, does it live up to the hype?
La Comer offers a shopping environment with a modern design and a more gourmet feel than found at other grocery stores in Puerto Vallarta. A large produce section offers the expected selection of fruits and vegetables, but also a wide assortment of organic produce and harder-to-find fruits, vegetables and fresh herbs. There is a fresh bakery section, a deli featuring many choices of imported cheese and cured meats, a pre-packed and cut-to-order meat section and fresh fish and seafood, all designed with wide, open spaces to encourage some leisurely browsing.
For the not-so-avid home cook, there is also a café to enjoy coffee and pastries, and a big take-out and prepared foods section. For foreigners missing a taste of home or Nationals looking for something a little exotic, there is a large imported foods section as well as an entire aisle dedicated to healthy food, packaged organics and superfoods.
La Comer certainly offers the broadest wine and spirits selection of any grocery store in Puerto Vallarta, including a nice selection of Champagne and sparkling wines, with prices that rival Costco. Add in their fresh flower section and a several displays of chocolates and small home items that would make a perfect “hostess gift”, and La Comer is a great one-stop-shop if you are either invited to a dinner party or hosting one.
The main aisles of the store are not as wide as other local grocery stores, and there were some cart traffic jams on opening weekend, so avoiding peak shopping hours may be wise if you are looking to get in and out quickly. A pharmacy, home goods, perfumery and clothing selection round out the shopping experience at La Comer, and judging by the crowds during its inaugural week, it seems that it will be a popular shopping choice with both local and foreign residents. And here comes the best part, they have delivery service at very reasonable prices!
