When I moved to Puerto Vallarta in 2009 from Toronto, Canada, I knew that there would be many amazing changes ahead for me, my partner and our two young children. Moving to a new country always has challenges, especially with a young family in tow, but being prepared to navigate those challenges has been the key to our success. Having just made an exciting career change in opening Vallarta Luxury real estate, I found myself reflecting on some of the approaches that were helpful in creating this new and wonderful life in my family’s new home.

• Don’t be shy to ask questions. There are numerous Facebook groups dedicated to finding the answers to almost any question you may have about moving to Puerto Vallarta. Try Puerto Vallarta: Everything You Need or Want to Knowor the Young Professionals Organization Puerto Vallarta to get advice, support and questions answered.
• Create a support system. Like the song says, “you gotta have friends”, and even for the more introverted among us, making friends is easy to do in Puerto Vallarta if you make the effort. Facebook is a great resource for finding social clubs in Puerto Vallarta and volunteering your time with local charities and community/business associations is a great way to get started.
• Practice your Spanish. Although English is widely spoken in Puerto Vallarta, working on your Spanish not only makes navigating life in your new home easier, but it also allows you to feel more connected with the local community.
• Don’t be scared to take chances. You moved here for a new adventure in your life, so go out and grab it.

As I embark on this new chapter, I’m grateful for the everything that Puerto Vallarta has given me and my family: great friends, a wonderful career, excellent education for my children and the incredible Vallarta lifestyle.
