Día de Muertos in Puerto Vallarta: A Celebration of Life, Culture, and Tradition

Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) is one of the most important cultural celebrations in Mexico, and Puerto Vallarta takes part in these festivities with vibrant and unique traditions. For new homeowners, long-time residents, and visitors alike, this is a wonderful time to experience Mexican culture and join in an unforgettable event that honors both life and death with love and joy.

From October 31 to November 2, Puerto Vallarta will be filled with colorful altars, parades, music, and, of course, La Catrina—Mexico’s iconic symbol of death portrayed as a lavishly dressed skeleton. A focal point of the city’s celebrations is the world’s tallest Catrina, a breathtaking 25-meter (82-foot) statue installed on the Malecon. It’s a remarkable sight, built to surpass the previous Guinness World Record of 18 meters held by Zapotlanejo, Jalisco. The Catrina is made of hundreds of pieces, and the intricate work involves weeks of design and assembly by a large team of artists and engineers

Along with this towering Catrina, you’ll find smaller versions throughout the Malecon, where local businesses and artists have crafted their own unique creations. The Malecon will also feature traditional ofrendas (altars), beautifully decorated with marigolds, food candles, and photographs to honor the spirits of loved ones.

Festivities You Won’t Want to Miss

Altars and Catrinas Exhibition: Stroll along the Malecon and enjoy the exhibitions created by local artists and cultural institutions.

Parades and Performances: Be ready to witness lively parades with participants in elaborate costumes, face painting, and traditional music. Performances by local musicians and dance troupes will add to the festive atmosphere.

Nightly Celebrations: The city comes alive at night with pyro-musical shows and mesmerizing video mapping displays, celebrating the traditions of Día de los Muertos with a modern twist.

Local Traditions: For a more intimate cultural experience, visit some of Puerto Vallarta’s cemeteries, where families gather to clean and decorate gravesites, sharing food and stories with their deceased loved ones.

Whether this is your first time celebrating Día de los Muertos or you’ve been part of it for years, Puerto Vallarta’s blend of history, art, and community makes this a must-see event. If you’ve just bought property here, be sure to take part in this unique experience that blends respect for the past with a vibrant celebration of the present. For those visiting or considering making this beautiful city their home, the Día de los Muertos festivities give you a true sense of the rich culture that thrives in Puerto Vallarta.

Embrace the spirit of Día de los Muertos—it’s a celebration of life unlike any other!
